"How God Created the Gypsies" Old Tale

When God made men, he made them all different colours, to live in different places upon the earth.
He called them all before him, and told them he would send them each to a different place, and give each of them gifts the better to bear the hardships they would endure on Earth.

To the black man, he said: “You, I will send to the hot lands of Africa. You will have the gifts of dignity, pride and beauty. You will bring joy to all mankind through your music and courage.”
To the Yellow man, he said: “You, I will send to the lands of Asia. You will have the gifts of art, spirituality and intelligence. You will bring wonders to all mankind through the genius of your mind.’’

To the White Man, he said: “You, I will send to the cold northern lands. You will have the gifts of ingenuity, curiosity and creativity. Do not misuse these gifts and you will bring new horizons to all mankind.’’

To the Red man, he said: “You, I will send to the Great Plains. You will have the gifts of unity, understanding and co-operation. You will be the custodians of the great circle of life for all mankind.’’

While this was going on, the Gipsy Man stood apart. When God had finished with the others, he approached the throne.

“Please, Lord,’’ the Gipsy Man said, “where are you sending me?’’

“Nowhere in particular,’’ God said. “You may roam as you please.’’

“And what gifts shall I receive?” the Gipsy Man asked.

God looked down at him sadly. “You, my friend, will be shoved from pillar to post, reviled and mistreated, for I am giving you the greatest gift of all – freedom.’’
